Lots of people have been saying lots of things about Avatar. “It’s an amazing movie!” say some while others go “You just have got to see it!” and then there is this whole lot of big budget and 15 years into the making of the movie going on. So it is quite natural, more so for the extremely big movie buff as me, to want to see it. I did go see it.
Sathyam, 3D glasses, pop corn, friends and an open mind- I was ready to watch a movie. What the movie had for me was not as good as one would’ve hoped for with all that hype and all. Firstly, I’m sorry people who are “Absolutely amazed” or “Inspired” or “Totally moved” by the movie, I can’t make a promise this one’s going to make you smile. And others who thought “Well, so? What’s so great?” I can promise you a smile at the end of this.
Secondly, and on a more important note, let’s face it, the plot’s simple. It’s almost as if Mr. Cameron stole the story off a 5th grader’s English paper. And after seeing some ulti movies in my life, the story was way too predictable; it was a simple plot- no interesting but sneaky twists, just plain straightforward story. And the dialogs, geez, such corny dialogs! I mean is this a movie or a movie about how to write corny dialogs for every situation? The dialog defines corniness and cheesiness, to a very large extent. In future, when kids are taught how to write good dialogs, I can only hope this movie would prove to be a class long thing on how not to write dialogs. For the kind of dialogs in this movie, its best seen 15 years ago. One can only think “Well somebody was paid big bucks to write such corny stuff” while hearing the dialogs in this movie. The audiences are not a bunch of corniness craving people you know? The word “intelligence” is tossed around a lot these days. I think it's about time Mr. Cameron got to know about it!
All that big budget and 15 years has been fruitful, with respect to the visual effects and the general presentation of the movie. Save the embarrassment of having to wear grandma sized glasses to see its awesomeness, it was a visual treat, no doubt. It is definitely the next step to animation. And yes Pandora looked nice. But no, that is not reason enough to call a movie “amazing” or anything on those lines. But it is definitely a sure catch in theaters, because it's no fun watching it at home in DVD, 15 years of work and big money is lost in that case.
